貼進庶民生活丶文化細節… 之類的微觀歷史著作，就社會的發展特徵來看，應是占著主流的角色。
但近年來，「大歷史（Big History）」的概念逐漸發展起來，這個「大（Big）」已完全不是過去任何東西方史學潮流曾經有過的，因為他的「時間之大」是 137 億年之久，而「空間之大」是整個已知宇宙為範圍。
歷史，其實是「人類」自我了解的記錄與探究過程，確認「人」之所存在於宇宙間的位置與相應而來的意義。
因此，了解「大霹靂（Big Bang）」到太陽系與地球的誕生，是宇宙學作為歷史的第一階段；而地球誕生以來，透過太陽的能源供給，地球逐漸形成具複製能力的細胞到物種的演化，這是分子生物學作為歷史的第二階段；再往下，自五百萬年前的人種開始發展，到文明肇始之前，作為歷史的第三階段；第四階段，就進入了大家比較熟悉的歷史範圍。
